i'm not looking to get into that field, but would like to as a hobby. anyone a carpenter by trade? how'd you get started, did you tag along with someone who was, watched what he did, and learned it?

what i'd like to know is doing floors, tiles and wood floors, bathrooms, sinks, kitchen cabinets, caulking, sheetrock, etc.

reading books and watching some this old house doesn't cut it, i've always done that on and off... and still been curious.

you don't see tricks of the trade from those sources.

I learned it from watching.

I helped/watched my dad & grandfather build 3 houses.

What I didn't learn I can get from books.

Obligatory Spelling Nazi Post:

It's "carpentry", not "carpenting". Carpenting sounds like some weird form of flooring material.

My Father was a General Contractor and I (and most of my friends) worked on his jobs every summer and during school vacations. Later when I became a Union Carpenter I went through their Apprentice Program for 3 years.

What you are looking to do is more than carpentry work, you want to be a Jack of All Trades. Other than going to school or working on a job the best way to learn is to read up on it and just do it. You will learn more from hands on experience (and failures) than whatching TV programs.

You can also make friendss with someone who is knowledfable in that area and have him show you
