Journalism? Hehehe... don't think so. We are known for our business school, engineering, architecture and I think above all, our CS.

CMU => Pittsburgh, WELCOME TO HELL!

forgot to mention we have one of the oldest drama departments (if not first) so yeah, we are known for that too.

good CS. if CIS is CS, sure. if CIS is MIS, then yeah, apparently its a good B school too so its probably good in that. although i consider MIS somewhat worthless because apparently even the best trained MIS peeps in college get out into the real world and still don't know how to set up a computer.

Well, Seagate is building a $30 million research center in Pittsburgh just to be close to the talent at CMU. They are definitely well-respected as a CS school.

I'm applying to the Carnegie CIS program for next year too, though I'm not sure I'll get it. Also I might have to transfer out of CIS into business administration with a minor in CS if Computer Information Systems does not prove to be techie enough.

I'll go visit the school sometime in the spring to decide for myself, but its supposed to be good, though dcdomain's comments are a bit discouraging

Sorry Tomcat... I just wanted to make sure you knew what you were doing. Before I came here, my friends who were already here, told me not to come, and the reasons for doing so. However, I figured, great, better environment to study in. I chose to ignore them, and now I'm in the hell hole. I mean, I don't even have time to really take advantage of any activities if there were any, so I guess it's no big loss. It's just that the atmosphere around here is... very gloomy, which makes me a pessimist.

As with any school, its up to you to make the most of it.

Hehehe, Business Administration is the joke of the school. It's a good school and all, but there's no work what so ever involved. If you do, make sure you do minor in CS. Paying this much money for the BA is a waste, you'll have time to double major if you want.

edit: On your visit, it won't look too bad, when I visited, it was ok, it wasn't beautiful or whatever, but I came here on a nice day, people were outside... look me up if you want. I'll most likely be in studio doing work...

dcdomain: Thanks for the advice, I will consider my choices carefully. I am currently in a small NH town so I dont think Pittsburg will be that much of a dissapointment for me. In terms of the male/female ratio I think I'll manage.. I don't communicate with too many american girls anyways, my girlfriend is russian.. hope CMU has some kind of russian community, I will find out about that.

I have also Applied to Renssellaer Polytechnic Institute and Worcester Polytechnic Institute as well as some others so I should have some options.

Thanks again for your advice.

Now I'm never one to defend Pittsburgh, but if you want gloom, go visit IUP in Indiana, PA. Talk about a nasty little hell hole of a town... You are right, though; Pittsburgh is one of the most depressing cities I've ever spent time in.

nateholtrop,

CMU is an excellent school, with probably the best CS program East of the Mississippi. It's well respected and Carnegie Mellon's degrees carry a lot of weight. Pittsburgh is not the nicest city in the country (well, if you like abandoned warehouses, obscene income taxes, and buildings stained with soot from the old steel mills, then it's your kind of place) but CMU is located right next to one of the nicest and most active sections of the city with quite a bit to do. Rent in the area is pretty expensive (by Pgh standards), but there are plenty of cheaper alternatives a little further from campus. If you decide to transfer, feel free to ask if you have any questions about the area.
