CarMax makes a pretty nice profit per car

"...returns with an offer of $15,000. It's less than the Kelley Blue Book value but more than the customer would get on a dealer trade-in. A glance at CarMax.com reveals comparable Escapes priced well over $15,000, making it likely that Decker will meet the company's average gross of more than $1,800 per vehicle. "

Carmax is such a ripoff. My buddy used to work there. He also told me that they beat the hell out of the cars and when a car is getting detailed or fixed, they really neglect much of the car.

Yup. Their buy offers are ridiculously low. When my wife had her 98 Eclipse appraised at Carmax they offered her $1800 for it. She sold it private-party three days later for $4500. To top it all off, we happened to see a nearly identical 98 Eclipse (same options, trimline, similar mileage) a Carmax priced at well more than triple the offer they made to my wife for her car.
