John Carmack has commented about HL2 benchmark and this is what he said:

Unfortunately, it will probably be representative of most DX9 games. Doom has a custom back end that uses the lower precisions on the GF-FX, but when you run it with standard fragment programs just like ATI, it is a lot slower. The precision doesn't really matter to Doom, but that won't be a reasonable option in future games designed around DX9 level hardware as a minimum spec.

Bad news for Nvidia users.

man, that really leaves little light at the end of the tunnel for the FX lineup...

why, oh why didn't nvidia see this coming? amazing. glad the 9700 came out before the FX, otherwise I'd probably have gotten one.
but others have raised a good point; that by the time D3 and HL2 are out, we'll all need faster cards to get the real eye candy.

Actually, when HL2 comes out the 9800 line will be the fastest cards for it and we won't see anything better for a while.

Well, since nVidia pissed me off, I'm glad they're getting their just deserts.

I still don't think the DX9 thing is that big of a deal though- by the time there are many good DX9 games out, the 5900 will be last years news anyway.

I won't get any new cards or anything until BTX format is properly finalized now, and am confident I can still enjoy both games with my 9700Pro...
