CarFax wants 44.99 for 5 records. That's a ripoff especially since there are so many cars out and this is the first layer of cancellation. Has anyone used any alternatives?

I don't give Carfax that much credence anyway. Reported 0 issues, 0 accidents on my car - when my car was obviously in at least 1 and apparently in 2 before I got it.

Autocheck wasn't any better either.

i thought the purpose of carfax was: once you are set on the car you are buying, you just check to make sure that the owner says what actually happened (i.e. reported accidents, and possible storm damage and such). it should be one of the last things not the first you do before buying a car.

I disagree and the reason for that is because I don't want to go out, inspect a car and then find out that it is junk. If I can save time by looking up the VIN and then discovering whether or not there is something wrong with the title, I'm going to do that. When I was searching for my car, had I not did it this way, I would've wasted SOOO much time because most of the cars on craigslist had screwed up titles and whatnot. Yeah it may have a "clean title" cause it isn't salvage, but being in an accident that disables the car is not what I'd consider "clean". I've seen some really dirty title histories for cars and using carfax when it was unlimited was a real time saver but now with their $45 for 5 reports bullshit, I'm never going to use them again and will just use autocheck exclusively unless they try too try to pull a fast one on me.

Carfax is generally useful for the dealership to try and justify why they will pay you less than you want for your car. If you buy a car from them that has a Carfax (poof!) they then try to downplay it. :p
