A few weeks ago my girlfriend got a letter that was telling her that the IRS needed to verify some information from her tax information from 2001. It said to resend her information and gave an address and looked pretty damn official. Whoever made this did put a lot of effort into it. Anyways, My aunt works for the IRS so we called her and she said not to ever send anything in response to a letter cause there are a few identity fraud scams out there impersonating the IRS. She said that the IRS rarely (if ever) sends letters requesting you send anything via mail. If they do, it will have a phone number to call - be sure to call it and have them identify some of your information on file. FYI.
