Well let me give a couple of facts about myself,

I'm 22, i pretty much messed up high school because i really didn't care much, hung with older crowd and well they could afford to be missing school and i didn't. I grad with a sub 2.0 GPA so no college would take me ideally. I had a strong passion for cars, i went to UTI ( automotive school) spent 30k got a diploma there which is somewhat equal to a associate degree in automotive technology. I worked at a dealership for a year and after i found out what it was really like in the auto bushiness i didn't like it. I rather work on cars as a hobby then a career. I left and moved back home and picked up a 3rd shift job at a bank.

The bank gig was ideally only temp. I was trying to get something better but nothing went good for me. So i stayed became full time there. I've been with them roughly 2 years now. With the whole lasalle and bank of america merger. It isn't a nice area to be right now. I started to go back to school about a year ago, 2 classes a semester while doing a 40 hour 3rd shift job. I wanted to attempt a career in the criminal justice field, not looking exactly to be a police officer but something along the lines.

So here i am right now. With a somewhat shakey job like a lot of people. A very good friend of mines mentioned he had a opening at his place. It was a computer tech support, they have their own programs and they just assist the customer use it. They recently hired a guy with a degree and turns out he knew nothing so they had to teach from EVERYTHING. He said if that was the case i would be an ideal candidate with his referral i should be a a shoe-in.

here is the my problem, my bank job is 10 mins away from me, i can attend school in the morning freely and the other days i have time to do everything that i need/want. There is no chance of moving up or anything similiar. the computer gig, would be a 1.5 hour commute I THINK, it normally takes me 30-45 mins to drive without morning traffic. But either way its a normal 9-5 job which i dont mind, it pays about 33% more then my bank job. But problem is i doubt i would be able to attend school.

As of right now i have a couple of people telling me to stay with the bank, but i would need to stay with them for about 5 years till i'm done with school at my rate. So with that in mind and possibly having a solid career and a chance of advancement, i'm seriously considering going after the computer gig.

The computer gig sounds like a dead end job as well, if it were me I'd keep going to school and maybe even try to take on more classes per semester. I took 3 last semester and I easily could have worked full time.

can I ask for details on why you didn't like working in the industry as an auto tech?

..but I was taking online classes. If you want to stay on campus maybe just add one more online course for the 100 and 200 level stuff, in my experience they involve an hour of work per week tops.

well working at a dealership pretty much meant warranty repairs, and everything was on a flat rate system. it was 3 hours to R/R an transmission that VW failed to correct. 5 hours to r/r transfer everything over off a long block. simply i was racing the clock rather then doing quality work. I was strongly encouraged to upsell items. But since most of the cars i was getting had 5k-25k miles on them its not exactly easy to sell. Other techs would sell pointless flushes at 25k mark but i couldn't do it because it was too early in the car's life and rather pointless. I attempted to be a honest tech and not sell pointless things. I wasn't cutting it. I could of been a shady tech and made money but i rather not. I tired it for a couple of weeks and a book 50-60 hours in 40 hours time but it just wasn't right. Plus on top of that my manager was screwing me out of money, before work is performed we agree on the amount of money or hours a tech would get paid. say 8 hours on customer pay, at the end of it, oh we had to give you 6.5 instead because of this and that. This happened all too often so i said screw it. The market gets really slow in the winters where everyone in the shop would only book 15-25 hours and spend 40-50 hours there. It just wasn't a constant pay check.

that aside, i was thinking about online classes, this semester I've only enrolled in 1 class and it was my first online class, i wanted to see how that went. Right now I'm exploring the online classes route to see how things go. I know for a fact that the bank job is a dead end up, i knew it going in 2 years ago. i stayed because it was easy for me and worked, average pay, little work, no stress. Now with the merger i've been asked to do more for the same pay. I've been told there is no more room in the budget for any pay raise. The recent announcement for 30,000 layoffs will involve my field of work as i was told by managers. since i was part of the last one hired... hence why the computer gig looks a little tempting for me.

@ capt caveman.... i've been very lost since i graduated high school. I realized i've messed up big and now i'm paying for it.

You are making a huge mistake.

Stick with the bank job, and GET YOUR DEGREE.

You will curse yourself later in life if you don't.

but i can also get a degree if i go the other route, just need to find colleges that offer nights, weekend or online classes, it would just be a non-conventional way. Well what i'm doing not isn't conventional to begin with but still..

bank job or computer job, i still work 40 hours a week, plan to attend school (2 semsters tops unless i get really comfortable with online classes)

You also don't want to add 3 hours of travel time to your job, it sucks ass to drive that long every day. Between time, gas and car maintenance, the 33% higher pay is gone.
