I currently make about $55k in a field that will get me nowhere else. I get great benefits and paid vacation.

I am wondering if I should accept this job. It pays less (41k) but it is in the field I got my degree in, IT. I would also get decent benefits, but a little less than what I currently get right now.

I would have to eventually sell my house and move because this new job is about an hour away.

Please help!!!!!! Is it worth it to change jobs with a $14k/yr pay cut and less benefits?

Hell no. Unless you absolutely hate your current job and that new job offer rapid advancement.

That said, I might have to take a $17k paycut and move back to San Francisco when my mail order bride comes to the USA

I don't see your motivation. You basically only said negative things about this new job, aside the fact that it is IT.

I dont' absolutely hate it but most of the time I'm extremely bored. I do very little actual work and spend most of my time there just sitting around. I feel as though I'm wasting away and my brain is rotting.

What were you doing for 55K, and what would you be doing for 41K? If you think the 41K job would lead to better advancement down the road, then maybe. It's really hard to say - there simply isn't enough information to answer this question :)

Yep. What's the upside that makes you want to switch jobs? Do you want to work in IT that badly? Does the new job give you a promotion track? Or will you just be stuck at 41k forever?

Sounds like a great job then because you can use that spare time to earn an MBA or earn certification in your field to advance your career, while they are paying you!

The upside if I switched jobs is I could expand my skillset in IT - where there is currently many opportunities. For example, if I were in IT and were to get laid off, I would have the option of seeking employment other places that could use my skills.

The demand for my current job is zero. There are only about 200 people in the United States that do what I do, and the skills I have learned are of little value to any other employer. So basically if something were to happen to my current job (ie fired, laid off, terminated, etc), I would be stuck and it would be very hard to find another decent paying job with the current skills I have.

BTW I am currently an aircraft arresting systems technician.

I would keep your current job and use all the free time to study IT related subjects. If you are ever fired/layed off you'll have some IT knowledge.

Try finding a better IT job while staying where you work? Or is this IT opportunity just so great that you have to jump all over it?
