I currently have an Associates degree in Computer Science. I'm having a terrible time trying to find a job. (Yes I know the market is not good right now.) But I've been looking for the past two years. In the meantime I'm taking courses toward a BS. I'm a non-traditional student(slightly older than normal). Anyway, I'm getting really depressed physically, because although I've had some interviews, they have all turned me down. I really don't have any actual job experience, just 3 months at a local computer shop repairing computers. They layed me off because of lack of work. I've now been looking for another job for about 6 months and have yet to find anything.

I am looking for an entry-level programming (game programming would be nice) or PC Technician position. The problem I'm facing is that all of these so-called entry-level positions have requirements of 2-3 years work experience. How is someone like myself supposed to get their foot-in-the-door with no work experience?

------------------------------------------------------------
I'm VERY desperate and have been thinking on just lying on my resume saying I do have a BS degree, just to get a job. Who knows, the company might not check it out until a 1-2 years later, and by then, I'll have my two years experience to go to work for another company. My brother knows someone who did this, and it worked for them.
------------------------------------------------------------

I really don't want to do what I said in the last paragraph above, but I'm very depressed at this point in my life, and need a job ASAP. Currently my parents are supporting me and they can't do it for much longer. I don't want to do data entry or other secretarial work. I'm already getting too old, and all of my friends have graduated and have 4-5 years experience already. Data entry or other unrelated positions won't give me any of the needed work experience I need in programming or technician.

Does anyone have any advice? I don't have any friends in the computer industry to help me get my foot in the door. I've thought about A+ & MCSD certifications and others, but it will still take me some time to get these. I need a job now.

It's my opinion, that companies throw away applications if you don't have a Bachelors degree. This is very depressing because I KNOW what I'm doing and have the knowledge I need for an entry-level job. I just don't have a higher level degree right now.

...........Am I going to have to work at McDonald's or Taco Bell until I get a BS degree?

Have you tried looking for paying internship positions? They obviously won't be expecting a BS degree for an internship position.

Another avenue that seems popular is applying for a QA (Quality Assurance) position (in house tester). I've heard of people moving from QA to development. And even if it doesn't lead to development, it still pads your resume with development related experience.

Another idea would be work on a small programming project in your spare time. Write a little game or something. Do a good job and mention it on your resume. It will give you something to talk about during your interviews. It would be even better if it was vaguely related to what the company does.
