Hey all,

Just for fun, I want to know what kinds of experiences all of you have had in regards to Computer Engineering internships/coops - good or bad. Care to share your experiences? Here would be a good place. Be sure to include where you worked, how you liked it, how it helped your school/career, etc. Most importantly, Would you recommend working with the company you interned for? If you want, share how much you made.

First, I'll start with what I've done so far. I'm going to be a senior at Michigan Tech this coming fall, and am on my second internship. My first internship was a 10-week program in summer 2007 where I worked for the Air Force Research Labs at Eglin Air Force Base near Pensacola, Fl as part of the Air Force's TRIP program. My work included designing a flight controller, start to finish, for a hand-launched unmanned aerial vehicle. It was pretty sweet. Basically it was micro controller programming in C. The pay worked out to be $25+/hr with reimbursments for gas, per diem, lodging, and wages.

I HIGHLY recommend talking to your AFROTC recruiter about the summer TRIP program if you're an EE/ECE. You're almost 100% guaranteed an internship if you qualify (basic physical, between sophomore and junior year, at least 60 credits) because they never fill all 50 slots and never have 50 applicants. It's also a non-obligatory military commitment. It's a fantastic program.

Right now I'm on a 8 month coop with NewPage paper mill in Wisconsin. This coop sucks hard. I'm heading a "network security project", which involves an antivirus rollout primarily. I make $18.50 and rent is paid for. I hope this coop isn't a waste of a time, and companies will actually look at this and want to hire me more.

So far, I've had a lot of positive responses about my first internship. Everyone I talked to at job fairs wanted to know what i did with micro controllers. So I suppose that's good experience for anyone who cares.

Senior at Michigan Tech eh?

<----- senior CpE at Michigan Tech

I had one internship but it wasn't really CpE related, I'll expand on that later.

My father works at NewPage in Michigan and from what I've heard from him, your coop experience doesn't really surprise me. I don't think they really have positions for CpE majors. I interviewed for an internship at a similar place (forget the name, but they were at the career fair) a couple of years ago and although I didn't get an offer, it seemed like I would've done something similar to yours now. Some companies see Computer Engineering and think IT or System Admin stuff, when in fact we are closer to EE. But also a problem with doing CpE instead of EE is that you usually are not quite as qualified for the EE positions that a place like Newpage does have available, although as a sophmore or junior you have had just about the same classes.

Go huskies! Geez, I probably know you, or at least could recognize you. I was just up at tech this past weekend to visit my gf. I've decided I actually miss school, mostly because I really don't like my job.

I totally agree. I know that's true, because everyone at the mill thinks I'm IT.

Georgia Pacific (got offer)
Intergraph (4 hours)
US Steel (got offer)
US Army RDECOM (interview sometime this week)

I had 8 interviews through my school (U of AL), but these are the ones that have requested second interviews.

I guess I was transistioning to EE from CpE when I did my internship in the electrical I&C dept of a nuke plant. did some programming to automate some things, it was fun. that was 2004. it's 2008 and i'm a EE and still there, everyone comes to me for programming so it's kinda cool to be the go to guy.

Beware paper mills. Not sure what GP can offer you though. But based on personal experience, you'll either be doing PLC programming (not as exciting as it sounds), process control (reading charts of sheet data, and analyzing bump tests), or IT (like me).

I would go with RDECOM personally if they offer you a job. Many military internships for engineers are actually exciting because they want to recruit you, and you can almost pick where you want to work all over the country. Just my 2 cents.

Too true, avoid "controls engineering" and anything with PLC in the description unless you just like to do the same thing over and over, learn nothing, and apply little critical thought. Those are jobs for controls engineers - people without a BSE.
