Hey all,
Just for fun, I want to know what kinds of experiences all of you have had in regards to Computer Engineering internships/coops - good or bad. Care to share your experiences? Here would be a good place. Be sure to include where you worked, how you liked it, how it helped your school/career, etc. Most importantly, Would you recommend working with the company you interned for? If you want, share how much you made.
First, I'll start with what I've done so far. I'm going to be a senior at Michigan Tech this coming fall, and am on my second internship. My first internship was a 10-week program in summer 2007 where I worked for the Air Force Research Labs at Eglin Air Force Base near Pensacola, Fl as part of the Air Force's TRIP program. My work included designing a flight controller, start to finish, for a hand-launched unmanned aerial vehicle. It was pretty sweet. Basically it was micro controller programming in C. The pay worked out to be $25+/hr with reimbursments for gas, per diem, lodging, and wages.
I HIGHLY recommend talking to your AFROTC recruiter about the summer TRIP program if you're an EE/ECE. You're almost 100% guaranteed an internship if you qualify (basic physical, between sophomore and junior year, at least 60 credits) because they never fill all 50 slots and never have 50 applicants. It's also a non-obligatory military commitment. It's a fantastic program.
Right now I'm on a 8 month coop with NewPage paper mill in Wisconsin. This coop sucks hard. I'm heading a "network security project", which involves an antivirus rollout primarily. I make $18.50 and rent is paid for. I hope this coop isn't a waste of a time, and companies will actually look at this and want to hire me more.
So far, I've had a lot of positive responses about my first internship. Everyone I talked to at job fairs wanted to know what i did with micro controllers. So I suppose that's good experience for anyone who cares.
