Card Upgrade: Confusing data and recommendations

Hello all,

My current system specs are AMD Athlon II X2 240@ 2.8Ghz with a 8600gt GPU all running on a Cooler Master 390w PSU. The 2 12V are rated at 18A and 16A

I will be gaming at 1366 x 768 and am looking to replace the 8600gt with a suitable upgrade while retaining the PSU (its just a few months old).

So far I have narrowed down to the 5670, 5750 and 9800gt eco.

While the 5670 seems to be the ideal choice, except with 400 SP's against the 4770's 640 SP's (while GDDR5 and 128 bit mem bus are comparable) the 5670 looks quite underpowered and considering the 4770 is a decent mid range card I would like something least that powerful.

The 9800gt eco version (10% lower clock) without an additional power connector also seems to be alright and its suggested it should run well for me, but its more than a couple of generations old.

Online research through forums has pointed out that the 5750 most probably wont run on my PSU. Also the recommended PSU for the card by ATI is 450w.

Now the confusing data out there is that the power consumption increase of the 5750 over the 5670 is marginal and if the 5670 should run well on my PSU, the 5750 should also manage just fine. http://www.anandtech.com/show/2917/13

Additionally using the extreme power calculator my current system recommended PSU is 387w (50% capacitor aging in all cases). Switching to a 5670 brings it down to 368w. Switch to a 5750 and it goes to 409w (the increase seems to be inconsistent with anandtech finding). And with a 9800gt it shoots to 446w ( maybe 430 as 10% lower clock than a regular 9800gt for the eco).

So while its been widely discussed that the 9800gt eco without a power connector should run well on a 400w PSU, and the 5750 shouldn't run, the data seems to suggest to the contrary. And the additional power computed for the 5750 over the 5670 is quite large compared to anandtech's testing. Finally all requirements were the "recommended requirements" shown by the calculator. The minimum requirements shown by the calculator in case of the highest of 9800gt was 397w.

What should I do. The 5670 seems quite underpowered . . . and hence was seriously considering the 9800gt. But since 5750 is even more powerful and seems to consume even less power I am sold on it, except most people suggest it shouldn't run on my PSU.

My budget is around $130. The powercolor 5750green edition without a power connector and lower power consumption is just the perfect thing I am looking for except it cost $180. (POWERCOLOR Go! Green AX5750 1GBD5-NS3DH Radeon HD ...)

Alternatively are there any other cards which would suit my purpose (1366x768 gaming at max details no AA) which I haven't considered

This equation is too muddled for me to make the right choice. Would appreciate all the help I can get.

Cheers!

I do agree that with only 390 Watts you are very limited but you should still be ok based on your current setup.

The 5750 would be your best choice. They can be found for $120 - $150. They do require a 6-Pin connector though. I find it hard to believe that your new power supply doesn't have at least 1 6-Pin connector. They are very common now. Do you have a link to your power supply so I can take a look at it?

Here is a link to a good 5750 for $139.99:

You might be able find some good deals it elsewhere and get it for $10 - $30 off this price.

If you can afford a 5750 for 130$ thats your best bet.
Just so you know your psu will handle a 5770 also.
Just use the molex to pci-e connector.

Please tell us your whole system specs , just to be sure.

Just get a cheap 5770. I saw one on sale recently for like $132.
You can always underclock it if you're running into problems on games.
At idle it uses very little power.

btw not sure how good your PSU is, but I have used an 8800GT 512 on a 350W Antec before without any problems.
This was a stock normal card.

Just use the molex to pci-e connector.

This. If you are playing at specified res then 5750 should be fine. I ordered this for my friend. The best deal I could find and it comes with a molex to 6 pin converter(peripheral connector for your PSU).

EDIT: The newegg deal ends tomorrow, you can buy the same card from amazon and for the same price.
