card reader

amol

Lifer
hi. i've been looking for a card reader to read the memory cards from my digi cams and camcorder (MMC, SD, CF, and Memory Stick)

anyways, the only ones that i can find are external, and i wanna save space on my desk, so are there any card readers that are internal that fit into the 3.5" or 5.25" bay?

i don't mind if it comes included with a floppy drive; i need one of those too 😱

thanks

only problem though . . . how is the first one internal? it has a usb and firewire thing for external .. .

????

The second one is like that too. There used to be ide based one I believe, but I haven't seen any in a while. I know some add on usb cards have an external usb jack internally. Most motherboards only come with the headers. You can either route the cable to the outside of the case or try to find a jack that connects to the headers internally.

The cheap option is the USB 1.1 one available from Elitegroup, Biostar and various others. No more than $9 if sold separately, and included with some of Elitegroup's $40 mainboards for free. It works fine, but being USB 1.1, it's obviously slow.

In USB 2.0 Hi-Speed, I like the Apacer/InWin unit best. The latter takes two USB ports, one to connect the card reader slots, the other is presented on the front bezel for convenient USB memory stick usage.

All other units are either way overpriced, or feature stuff that isn't useful on too many mainboards (like front sound or firewire connectors).

Obviously, you absolutely need to have a pair of available "front panel USB" headers on your mainboard. You should also check the header pinout against the card reader's, and shuffle the wires in the cable connector if required.
