Using Windows Vista home (64 bit) get the following problem with an internal card reader:

1. Inserted SD or CF card into card reader on front.
2. No windows pop appears.
3. Check Windows explorer, drives listed (G: H:, etc..).
4. Click on drive letter and windows alert stating "please insert a disk..."
5. Go into drive management console and drive is populated (e.g. G:\) but lists card as RAW format (i.e. not recognised)
6. Reboot PC with card in card reader
7. Can access card succesfully
8. Have tried cards on another PC and they can all be read succesfully without requirement to restart PC

I have removed the USB driver and windows reinstalled ok.

Any ideas please?

I have similar problems with my internal card reader and Vista x32. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. The system sees each drive and assigns a driver letter, but it doesn't work when a card is inserted.

I finally gave up and use a USB SD reader, as I only need SD functionality. I left the internal reader in place, as it at least gives me another front USB port. :disgust:

I had similar symptoms on my old system (HP m9077c). I never got a chance to figure out the culprit as the motherboard fried and I tossed both it and the case w/reader when I parted everything out in to a new system. I'd done everything with usb drivers, other chipset driver, bios settings, etc.. that I could think of. I'm reasonably convinced it was a hardware issue.

You might try relocating the internal connection to a different header on the mobo.
