card reader disconnecting

I have an ASUS a8n-premium and a Sandisk 6-in-1 card reader. When I have the reader plugged directly to the PC, it works for a few minutes, and then it just disconnects. It real annoying when I'm transferring photos over. Everything else seems to work ok when plugged directly into the USB on the pc.

However, if I plug the reader into one of the extra USB ports on my DELL 2001fpw, it works just fine and it stays connected.

Does anybody have any idea what might be the problem (hopefully it's the card reader)?

Thanks!

Could be a low voltage problem in your USB ports. COnsider using a powered hub - that should eliminate the problem.

Low USB port voltage can be the result of just too many USB devices connected for the power supply to handle. The result is usually a disconnect.

corkyg is completly right. that is usually the culprit. but then again u have a 450W ps. that should be enough. have u tried disconnecting other USB devices from ur computer? how many do u have, if any at all? Reply with more info, and we'll continue troubleshooting.

I have an Antec 450 Watt PS. You can see from my sig what I have in my system. I have a PDA (pocket PC) cradle, the Dell 2001FPW monitor, and the Sandisk 6-in-1 card reader in the USB ports. So, I tried removing all the USB stuff except for the card reader and so far so good. I can't believe that 450W isn't enough for what I have. Can it be possible that with 3 items plugged in the USB that my system somehow can handle that many connections (though that doesn't really make sense).

I have the same card reader at work, I may "borrow" it and see if I have the same problem.

Thanks!

Well, after trying out a new card reader (exact same model), it worked fine. There were some issues when I had mine and the new one both plugged-in. But the new one by itself worked.

This now gives me the excuse to buy an internal (3.5") card reader and maybe I'll still buy a stronger PS.
