Card Reader Connectivity Problem

I recently purchased an interanl card reader and connected it to my MB on an old system. Nothing. Checked the reader on another PC, works fine. I thought that perhaps the reader was not backwards compatible to USB 1.1. So I bought a PCI to USB 2.0 card with 1 internal port (which I assumed meant the same kind of internal header found on the MB), not so. It has a regular USB port on the inside.

Is there an adapter that can connect an internal card reader (9 pin connecter I think) to a USB port?

Why not just get a USB reader/writer for the media you want and carry it with your camera kit? It is probably cheaper and more useful.
