card compatibility

My build is about 5 years old, beginning to show its age. I'm thinking about upgrading the GPU to get another year or two before a new build.

We use it for basic home PC (web browsing) and generally light gaming (Civilization). My son wants to play Fortnite on it, is getting serious lag. I'm not sure if it's server issues or the PC is just not able to handle. Here is what i have:

MB: Intel 1155 H67
CPU: i5-2400 3.1 GHz
RAM; 16 GB DDR3 1333
GPU: Radeon HD 5700
SSD 256GB
PSU: XFX 550W

so, two questions:

1) Can I upgrade the GPU with a current mid-range card (e.g., Radeon RX 570 4GB) and expect to see an improvement in Fortnite?

2) will something like Radeon RX 570 4GB be compatible with my MB? what do I need to check to ensure compatibility?

Yes, a midrange card upgrade would be perfect for your system. PCIe is backwards compatible and for a midrange card, having the latest PCIe 3.0 16x isn't necessary, as the bandwidth needed for a single GPU isn't much.

I think it's likely the graphics card that is limiting your gaming. Either the GPU just isn't up to scratch, or you're running into a VRAM limitation on a card that old. Which card specifically do you have, and how would you describe the lag? Is it just low fps, or do you have big pauses?

I agree with above, the 5700 is an older, lower end card. A new card is the primary thing to get right now.
