Once I eat some carb-rich food, whether it be candy, ice cream or breads (like moderate amount of pizza with crust) I become really sludgy. Mentally I get confused to the point I can't even read an email subject line. I feel tired all over. I'll end up laying down for 2-3 hours and often feel weak in the chest. Not like my heart will give out, but more like i just feel weak/faint.

Could this be a symptom of diabetes or an illness?

Just ten days ago I had a fasting blood test where I did not eat for the 12 hours leading up to it. The blood came back fine according to the lab. Don't know what else to ask the doctor to do.

It used to be that if I ate a pack of licorice I'd be super hyper from the sugar. I'd blast some music and go nuts.

In my uneducated non-medical opinion, you have diabetes.

Eating carbs like that causes your blood sugar to jump through the roof, which does make you sluggish. You sound like a pretty extreme case, though. At the very least, try walking around and staying active after you eat something like pizza. All those simple sugars want to be immediately burned by your body; sitting down and doing nothing is the last thing you want to do.

So the feeling of sluggish is normal?

If you had diabetes, it would have shown in the blood tests, even considering the fasting. What is the most likely scenario that you are more prone to a higher effect from slight blood glucose increase. My wife is diabetic, when her sugars increase or variates even a little, she can get tired and can get bad headaches. It all comes down to the person.

A follow up blood test may be in order as you may have a sluggish pancreas, meaning that it's insulin output is slow reacting to the glucose level in your blood. You then get a quick spike of glucose, which exhausts you before the insulin kicks in.

Thanks for the informative post!

Typically my diet is really clean, but during crunch time at college I let myself have some snacks. When I stick to my regular "diet" of healthy food I feel a dozen times better :) Its night and day between the difference. I should try and stick to it when cramming.

If you decide to do follow-up testing on your own, a glucose monitor and test strips are around $30 at Wal-Mart. The test strips are a pharmacy item but no prescription is required . . request security device be deactivated to avoid setting off exit alarm.
