My first guess would be a bad starter, it sounds like it is having trouble engaging the flex plate("flywheel" in an automatic). However the flex plate itself could be damaged too. Is that an RSX?

You can check if it is a bad spot on the flex plate by turning the engine over by hand a bit, and then trying the starter again.

When I worked at the Park District my girlfriend's dad's work van would do that randomly. Sometimes it would do it once, sometimes it would do it 4 or 5 times in a row.

Eventually it would start. Probably a problem with the starter.
