My car was broken into and I need a new side door window. Should I use my insurance or just pay for it myself?

I'm 90% sure I should pay for it myself as I assume my insurance rate would increase if I used the insurance.

broken window likely won't even reach the cost of your deductible.

though i doubt your insurance would increase.

Did a little bit of research. Doesn't seem worth it to have the insurance cover it. I've got Safelite coming out to my workplace tomorrow to fix the window.

If it happened in your driveway = home owners insurance should cover it.

If it happened in the streets = car insurance (if costs is more than deductible.

i would defintely just pay it. i wouldnt never report something minor to an insurance company, you dont want a record of that, in case you need insurance for something major later.

This. This happened to me before. I talked to my insurance and they said don't bother filing a claim, since I had a high deductible. The repair wasn't too costly and they came to my work to do the replacement and to vacuum up the glass.

My SUV was broken into in 2008 in Bal'more's Inner Harbor and I was stunned to get an estimate from ins. company of $5,128 for the damages. This was just a simple window smash and grab - they got a tiny air compressor (for inflating balls for sports) for all that effort and also cut themselves hopping in the broken window side too.

Keep in mind this was for an '06 Kia Sorento, so the dealer actually debated the estimate and had an adjuster examine it and offer to refurb or clean it up rather than replace the damaged interior. This brought the price down to $2800, so they offered me a $700 check if I accepted the repair/cleaning rather than the full parts replacements.

I accepted as I wanted my vehicle back on the road rather than wait a month for parts to arrive from Korea. I couldn't believe that initial estimate, and 6 years later I still find pieces of glass every so often on the carpet from that mess.

Is this a leased or purchased vehicle? If leased, and I'm not sure if this is true with side windows, but we had to fight to get Safelite to put in OEM Honda glass for our windshield. If not, on lease return, they claim car is not original and try to charge you a penalty. I'd at least ask them.

I'm glad some states require ins. co's. to provide zero deductible glass replacement in policies.

This happened to my ex. Deductible is $500, to fix window and clean up the broken glass was $250. (Note: Dealer wanted $700 to fix the window) She just paid for it.

In the states I've lived in, it's illegal to raise your insurance for filing a claim. However, you can lose your #of-years-without-a-claim discount.

And, what everyone has said, your deductible is probably too high for you to bother.

You should check your car for all the things you left in it and see if they stole any of them:

1. Car stereo
2. Laptop
3. 60" LCD TV you had just bought from Costco
4. Your favorite Rolex
