Car Warranty

I have 28000 miles on my '03 Chevy 1500 (2 wheel drive) and my warranty runs out at 36000. Continental Warranty Co. quoted me a 6 yr/ 100,000 mile warranty for a little under $1600. The package sounds pretty good (all on the website) except for the 50 copays. I'm not to keen on that. I'm just curious how does this plan sound to everybody else?

Talk to a GM dealer and see if you can get a GM extended warranty. I picked one up on a used GM vehicle for an additional 3yr/36,000 miles for around $800.

The only extended warranties I'd buy for a car are ones offered by the original manf.

Third party warranties ARE NOT WORTH IT. You're asking for nothing but headaches and a pain in the ass. Might as well flush your money down the toilet, because that's what you'll be doing.

I agree with the nothing but headaches. I disagree with flushing $$ down the toilet (unless you own a Honda or Toyota). My extended warranty at $1700 has paid for more than $6K worth of repairs. And I still have 25K miles left on the warranty.

If it is not with the maker of the car/truck it is NOT worth it.

When I had my shop someone said they had a warranty and showed me the paper work or something. I looked at it for all of 5 seconds and told them they would get a receipt after THEY paid me and THEY could file for a refund.

And IMO extended warranties on the majority of cars/trucks are not worth it. I have an 81 Chevy truck that still runs to this day as I did maintaince and kept it up, mind you she looks bad but starts, runs, and stops. Keeping up with PROPER maintaince and not beating the sh1t out of your truck = no need for an extended warranty.

Well, I don't agree with that. The $800 I paid for my GM extended warranty for my Z34 paid for itself easily. Between a dead power window, an alternator replacement, and a failing speed sensor, the warranty covered itself.

None of those would have been prevented with proper care. Alternators aren't supposed to crap out at 50,000 miles/3 years of use.

Had I had an extended warranty on my GMC Jimmy it would have been close to being paid for by the time I paid for two power window motors to be replaced, some goofy part in the security system to be replaced, and a leaking oil cooler.

Again. Things that preventative care can't cover.

Alt = around $100
Window Motor = $60
Speed sensor = $40

So $800 < $200 ????😕

Sound advice.

Yeh. Parts. Not labor.

Ever change the alternator on the GM 3.4L DOHC? It's HELL. It's a 3 hour job and the part alone was $350.

Window was $180 and the speed sensor was around $120.

If you need an extended warranty, go here!

If you want to buy an extended warranty, tell the sales rep that Russ from the IT dept referred you. They will take care of you.

Ahhh... yea. I am a mechanic. I use to have my shop while in school.

The Alt is NOT $350 unless you buy one from the dealer as a general person. As a mechanic I would get a discount but I usually buy my Alt;s from Napa or Autozone.

MOST cars/trucks will not even have as many problems as you did. My statements are for the AVERAGE person. Yes for some it may be worth it, but it is a crap shot at best. In the long run take the money you would have spent and put it in a CD and buy the parts you need if something does break.
