Of course, that doesn't stop a politician from sticking his head up his ass to reach for some juicy MTA-hate:Just before the crash, the gates came down on top of the vehicle, which was stopped on the tracks, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.
The driver got out to look at the rear of the car, got back in, drove forward and became stuck, the MTA said.
The train then slammed into the SUV, pushing it 10 train lengths.
If the preliminary information is correct, why did the driver enter the grade crossing with insufficient clearance on the opposite side. And if the gates were coming down with the bells and lights going off - get the hell out of the way. Driving 101. If the grade crossing was functioning properly, which seems to be the case, how could this really be the railroad's fault?Meanwhile, Conn. Sen. Richard Blumenthal wants answers.
“The real question is what caused this horrendous, probably preventable incident that reflects further on the need for safety and reliability in this railroad,” he said. “Apparently there have been other accidents at this sight which leads me to think the incident could have been preventable.”
