I got a 96 blazer now, and everything worked on it, or at least I thought it did... i didn't check the air conditioning (ugh I kick myself right now)... and hey, guess what! It doesn't work.

When you turn the air on, the compressor never kicks in (the clutch never turns it on)...

I'm wondering if there's more than one fuse. There's a fuse for "A/C Comp", which isn't broken, and I tried a different one, and that didn't work either.

The dealer will fix it, as they told me it worked great... (they will fix it or else I'll turn blue in the face. The truck I traded in had been recharged and converted from R-112 to 134A... so they will damn well make sure mine works)

What I'm wondering is, do you think if it makes no attempt to turn on, that the compressor is shot? Or is there more than one fuse for it...?

Thanks..

end rant :(

Probably low on refridgerant. If there's not enough pressure in the system, there's a safety that keeps the compressor from engaging. If the compressor were to engage with low refridgerant, it would destroy itself.

Yep.

Or maybe the compressor is broken.

Maybe, there is a brown recluse spider in the compressor keeping it from turning on :Q

I know the dealership would recharge it and fix the leak if that was the case, that's not that entirely expensive... but the compressor... I know they'd balk at that idea :(

so hopefully it's just got hardly any refrigerant in it

Unlikely that the compressor is shot. They usually last pretty well unless the system is improperly converted and the oil gets contaminated. Not that it would be anywhere near inconceiveable that the compressor died, just more likely to be low on fluid.

GM makes very solid compressors so I doubt that is it, but it might be your HVOC controls, when they first went to the new climate controls in the 95 trucks some people had some weird problems with them.

See if that dealer is worth a crap and fix it for you.

I'm sure they'll be fair about it, they offered to fix a seat belt buckle that we didn't even notice...

Just when it starts getting warm too, damnit.

It's not the harrison compressor I don't think... it's not the black model compressor, it's just one that doesn't say anything on it...

I could take a picture of it I suppose.

Not a black compressor? Is it factory a/c, or the added-on kind?

No, it's factory, it's just not the harrison black compressor...

would it kick in for just a second and quit if, or would it just not kick in at all if the refrigerant was too low?

If it's pretty low on refrigerant, the pressure switch will keep it from engaging the clutch at all.

Does your fan (blower) work?

yeah, the fan/heater and all the rest work...

just not the a/c

oh well I'm leaning toward the fluid being low, as it's never been recharged (or at least it looks that way)

and it's supposed to be 80 degrees in minnesota on monday... so yes, a/c is actually necessary!

What?? 80 degrees and you need the A/C?

I'm a wuss, and I wont even hit the A/C till it gets over 95 or so.

surely somebody from the midwest can attest to that.

And the dehumidifying effect of the AC is wonderful in high humidity :)
