4x2: What a dyslexic calls a 2x4" peice of lumber.

4x4: A four inch by four inch peice of lumber.

AWD: An All Wood Deck.

(j/k) :D

4x2 is just a two wheel drive car.

4x4 is a four wheel drive car, with locking hubs.

AWD is a more advanced four wheel drive system that has non- locking hubs so the front wheels can be driven at differing speeds so they wont bind in sharp corners on dry roads. The system also directs power to wheels that aren't slipping.

Hope this helps :)

4X2 is just a 2 wheel drive vehicle, 4X4 has a Transfer-case that when enguaged puts power to the front tires making it 4 wheel drive, with the option of 4 Low. I'm not exactly sure of the physic's of how 4 low works but thats the off-road advantage that AWD (All Wheel drive) does not have.

If you are only taking small trails or it's a road car AWD is great, for real 4 wheeling you want full 4x4.
