Car Transport nighmare - company loses man's Porsche Boxster S

It's possible that the original owner has two homes.

That really sucks. I don't like dealing with transport companies. The last time I bought an expensive car I flew out and drove it back across the country.

That's a pain but that's why we have insurance.

Reminds me of a story:

When I was in the Air Force in about 2003, a small group of moronic Airmen from Scott AFB in IL and civilians stole a Porsche 911 Speedster (remember those?) from a shipping truck. After driving it around for a while they looked in the glove box and saw that it was registered to Nicolas Cage. They promptly freaked out and decided the safest thing to do was to ditch it into a lake. The car (which was obviously much rarer than a Boxster S) was destroyed and they all ended up being prosecuted.

The only reason I knew about it was that Scott was under the same numbered Air Force as my base, McChord, and it affected the plea deal we could make on a guy I was prosecuting who had stolen some diamonds (this is as long a story as it sounds).

that's what insurance is for, but likely the case of wine and personal items aren't covered.

I shipped my car from IL to CA when moved back from college and I threw a bunch of crap that nobody would want to steal in the trunk and back seats of my car.

from wikipedia:

The 911 Speedster (option M503), a low-roof version of the Cabriolet which was evocative of the Porsche 356 Speedster of the 1950s, was produced in limited numbers (2,104) starting in January 1989 until July 1989 as both a narrow body car and a Turbo-look. The narrow version was produced only 171 times.

I'm guessing that Cage was a little more than unhappy.

It's possible the owner of the Porsche is military and changing bases. I'm currently stationed about an hour from Oakland, so it's possible.

Hit my 1 year mark in the AF a couple months ago, cool to see someone else who used to serve. The things stupid people will do have no bounds. 🙂

Stolen and recovered in 2002 and was owned by Nicholas Cage at the time of its theft. It was stolen at the time of Cage's movie "Gone in 60 Seconds." This 1989 Porsche Speedster was on its way to auction in 2002 when stolen from a transport truck outside of St. Louis, MO. With only 150 miles on it, the thieves drove approximately 100 miles to the Lake of the Ozarks and after a bit of a joy ride, in January, they decided they had enough fun and let it roll down a boat ramp into 12 feet of water. After recovery and settlement, the Speedster which is 1 of 802 Special Production vehicles, went through the restoration process. At the time of restoration the vehicle had 457 miles on it. Approximately 250 miles were added on the odometer during the repairs to the gauges. Presently there is less than 1,200 original miles on this soon to be 20-year-old car. It seems ironic that at the time of "Gone in 60 Seconds," Cage's character, the thief himself, was having "His Eleanor" stolen away. The thieves had no clue who's vehicle they were taking out for a ride. Some major publications to note this incident were "Playboy" August 2003 and People in January 2002.

so I was in oakland a few weeks ago and I see this car just sitting there...

What kind of contract did the owner of that car sign with that shipping co?

In the early 2000's my father had a car lost on its way down to their winter home. Ended up being 100% covered. In 2010 they got a call as the car had been in a hit and run, ditched and he was the last registered owner for the VIN.

This is just what I needed to see, my Shelby is getting shipped to my new residence in 3 weeks. 🙁

My dad has shipped two cars a year to Florida, every year since 1995 or so. Only once has a car been lost. Call it 1/34. You should be fine...😛

Apparently from the rather small sample size they like Lexus sedans anyway.

What I want to know is why the guy was transporting the car from CA to RI and it had FL plates.

A lot of people move to CA and never change their car registration to CA. Especially military who move around a lot. I knew a guy who moved here from the midwest and kept his car registered there even though he lived here for around 3 years and then he moved to Texas. So he was transporting a car with IA plates from CA to TX.

I think legally you have 30 days to change your registration after moving here. I'm pretty sure that military are excluded from this requirement though which is why cops don't really hassle you for having out of state plates especially if you live in an area that has a lot of military... like San Diego.

Guy probably moved here and then after a couple years got relocated to RI. Not really that strange.
