car transmission????

Just wondering, when i shift, my RPM difference is 1k between 1-2 2-3 3-4.........but it's only 500rpm between 4-5 why is that and is that normal? wouldn't i get much higher speed potential if there was the same 1k difference?

your engine probably doesn't have enough torque to move the car much faster in 5 than 4

RPM @ MPH can vary also with tire size and axel ratio though, What I posted should be exactly what you have

I run 2200RPM @ 70MPH 285/70/R16 tires 4.10 axel and 4L60-E 1st: 3.059 2nd: 1.625 3rd: 1.000 OD: 0.696

285 WIDTH TIRES! :Q

I like your OD of 0.6...an 0.5 would be nice.

What would prevent a tranny from having a 0.2 OD or something...? Engine power isn't really needed during cruising anyway...

And they still don't hook!!! 😉

The General Motors ZF/S6-40 6-speed is 1st: 2.640 2nd: 1.800 3rd: 1.290 4th: 1.000 5th: 0.750 6th:0.490

how do you find gear ratios?

Is there away to find ratios on my 95 240SX 5-spd manual tranny? OD seems pretty high..also the rear diff ratio as well.

I have books for some of the GM and Ford tranny's and a few great sites, plus a few that I hold onto for my father as he has had 4 or 5 Toyota's now.

Don't know about your 240SX, but your tranny is referred to as the M5, prolly get a hit in 10 minutes on a good Nissan forum 😉

That is where my zuk is at 65ish.

Boy, I wonder why 😛

Their is a fine limit between fuel consumption at crusing. You do not want the gearing so low as to cause lugging, but you want it as low as possable for good MPG. a .2 OD would never work unless you are doing about 200 or so or have extremely high diff gears. (7+)

I bet a Diablo has a final gear in the range of high 3's low 4's though.

.851 is a very short overdrive, very near 1.0. That's why your rpm barely fall from 4-5, not far from 1.0.

The six speeds usually have two overdrives, 5th and 6th.

The reason auto manufacturers don't put, say, .2 top gears is that it would take a damn big transmission to even FIT a gear ratio that tall in.

well, you know how that goes 😉

80mph, is right around 3300-3400 rpms for me too... and that's right around where my secondary injectors come on... it's like a drone... (headers don't help either)

But HP is what is used to keep the car going. Torque is used to get going.

That's slightly inaccurate..you need both, but since hp is a function of tq...well anyway.

during cruising you probably only need around 20hp for an average car, so its not a lot of hp. if you have gobs of torque in the low-end, you could probably cruise at 75mph at 1500RPM.
