car transmission problems

I have a piece of ****** automatic. Anyway whenever I start the car in the morning and go in reverse, I have to go very very slowly on the gas are else the RPM's shoot up and my car starts pounding in reverse. Forward gears work fine and then in the afternoon when the cars heated up and all it can go in reverse much easier. You guys think this is a major trans issue or not to expensive fix?
 
What kind of car, and service history, mileage, use?
Usually requires teardown and rebuild...but it is possible a servo is sticky/leaking or plugged, that a pan removal and vavlvebody inspection "might" find.
Worn clutches or broken band $$$, total rebuild or new/used trans
 
transmission fluid?

I just got rid of my 1996 Galant for that same problem. The transmission acted like yours, and just died completely on me and I couldn't get into any gear...
