Car Title Question

I have a simple question about my car title. The title was in my moms name and she signed it over to me recently. It was in her name because I was on my parents insurance policy so my insurance would be cheaper. Now that I just got married, my insurance will be the same as if I were on my parents policy so I want to get the car in my name now.

Which division do I take it to in the courthouse and will they re-issue me with a new title or just give me a new tag?

you go to the DMV and get a new title
it should not change your registration/tag/license plate

It depends from state to state. In Tennessee, we have a separate office that handles titles, etc... You said your mom signed it over to you, did she just sign the back of the title? If she only did that, you'll need to get a new title with your name on it. At that time, you'll need to purchase new tags, etc....they usually process transfers the same way they would if your mom sold you the car.

So once, you get the new title printed up, they'll give you a new registration and you'll be set. You can insure it whenever you want though....it doesn't have to be in your name to insure it. You just have to know the VIN# and Tag# usually.

Also depending upon the state, you may need to pay tax and/or get a new inspection. Again its dependent upon the state.
