Car Tire *Extended* Warranty

Alright, I'm buying tires from a national chain tomorrow. The guy I spoke with on the phone today (making sure he'll have them tomorrow) mentioned something about a warranty they offer. Now, I know better then to buy warranties (unless there's some other circumstance) but would it be worth it for these tires? They're Yokohama Parada Spec 2 size 205/45R17. By the sound of it, the warranty covers things that would make the tire unrepairable. Sounds like they could very easily wiggle their way out replacing a tire. The chain is Discount Tire Co./America's Tire Co.

As long as it's reasonably priced, an extended (or road hazard) warranty is usually a good idea for tires.

For example:

Warranty: three months from now, you run over a jagged piece of metal and it shreds two tires. They prorate the cost of the new tire based on how much tread is left on the fragged tires.

No warranty: Same scenario; you be dead.

BE SURE it's in WRITING that road hazards are covered. If not, don't bother.

I'd read the fine print very carefully. Don't listen to the salesguy - the fine print is what will screw you over in the long run. Most tire places basic warranty covers tires for X years/XXXXX miles, and if something happens to them before then, they'll pro-rate your current tires. I'd say fvckit to the extended warranty

I purchased the road hazard warranty with my Firestone Firehawks. The guy cut me a deal and pricematched Tire Rack so I figured what the hell. Never thought I would use it, until about three weeks ago when I drove down to Houston. When I got to my parent's house in Houston I noticed my driver's side front tire was low. I filled it up, but it was low again the next day.

I took the car to the Firestone dealer on Memorial Day and it turns out there was a piece of wire stuck in the tire. They did the repair for free and even though they were booked for the day, they squeezed me in.

how much are they ?

$545 mounted and balanced. My friend has AVS ES100's and he loves them. These should be even better😀😎

But I'll definitely read the fine print on that warranty tomorrow.

The firestone my buddy manages charged ~$8 a tire for their "hazard" warranty. If the tire is irrepairable, they give you a new tire if it's under a year. Over a year and they give you a pro-rated price.

If I was buying a set of junker tires less than $50 a piece I'd probably forego it. But, If I was paying more than that, I'd opt for it. Hell, I've had two tires destroyed by construction debris this year alone. If I had the option for the insurance on the tires I would have two new tires on the car. Instead...I'm out $100 for the two of them.

I'd stay away from it unless you have some spendy tires. or its fairly cheap. I've never shredded a tire in the past 8 years I've been driveing, and I'm not the easiest on tires. I've had some nail accidents, but a $5 plug took care of it. just my 2cents

that doesn't sound so bad..

I got like 70% treads left ^_^ on my potenzas

I , as well as my other family members, have had great service from Discount Tires- and buy exclusively from them now.
They have been very good about tire replacements if they are not repairable.
I definitely opt for the extra road hazard replacement certificates instead of the prorated standard warranty.
One 2 occasions, my father had a tire blowout during a road trip- Tire(s) were replaced during the trip (gotta have a spare) and when we got home- Discount tire reimbursed us for the cost of the replacement tire(s)

I have had poor experiences in the past with the way Tire Station/Firestone and their reluctance to replace tires - (they changed their road hazard policy during my ownership- fortunately I kept up with my paperwork/receipts)

My car is only like 5-6 month old.. with 7k miles 😛

I'd probably stay away from it. Just get you a couple of cans of fix a flat and a tire repair kit from your local auto store. Repairing a tire when it has been punctured with a nail or similar object is easier and faster than brushing your teeth.

This is for "unrepairable" damage like blowouts and what not.

Get it...really. You'd be surprised how easy it is to shred a sidewall on a car tire.

Need to find out what it covers, some have a mileage / time limit and then you fall into the pro-rate...some do not cover patches / plugs, only irrepairable damage.

For most, esp if purchasing low profile tires it's a good idea. I had a 3 week old Dunlop SP8000S (205/40R17 I think, maybe 45), get a irreparable side wall cut from road debris....it was a $190 tire at the time. They did try to leave off road hazard every chance they got when I was doing the paperwork for the new tire...not that I didn't have it on the other three.

One of the things I wondered was if you only purchased road hazard on one tire in a matched four tire set if that would work...you'd probably have to buy three from one vendor and the fouth from another.
