If you were buying a new car, which one of these two would you rather have? Why?

FYI: The car will not be modded (save for an ECU upgrade) and will never, ever, ever be taken to a track or raced on the street.

Well he did say an ECU mod so with just that alone the GTI will be pushing over 200 hp, the engine also has a lot more low end torque compared to the RSX.

I've driven both lots and i would say go with the RSX. I have a base model RSX and couldn't be happier...well, i guess if i had a type S i'd be happier but i think you get my drift. Plus you get that added comfort of the Honda/Acura reliability factor...

I'm saving my "fast car" money for a real car, like an S4 or M3.

I'd go with the RSX-S for reliability, not to mention you get 200 HP stock. VW's reliability seems to be going into the crapper from everything I've heard, although the GTI is a nice looking little car and reasonably quick stock.

A friend from work has a 2002 GTI 1.8T and likes it, although he's been in and out of the dealership for some stupid gremlin that keeps tripping the check engine light.

Both cars are more or less the same performance-wise.

For comfort, interior quality, durability, and features, I would choose the GTI.

For reliability and resale, the RSX.

sure is a nice boy racer car... :D ... but that's gonna be expensive... :( maybe around $27k... plus you'll be the envy of all ricers... which means your car will be a magnet for a brutal keyeing wherever you park.
