car stereo touch screen possibilities

I just got a 7" touch screen VGA monitor off Ebay, gonna mount it in my car and hook it to a pc which will be hooked to my HU (head unit) so I can have a ghetto'ize version of an expensive flip out touch screen DVD system, like the one Alpine makes.

I have a question. I don't want it to look like Windows, or Linux, I'm shooting for a customized interface. Not one that looks exatly like it, but along the lines of the Xbox's. With animation and all thay jazzy stuff. I have limited design skills, and no programming abilities. My first thought is to have one made by me from a company that does Shockwave stuff, Shockwave should be perfect for such an job. Anyone have any ideas of different solutions here? I'd use a pre-existing program if it let me tinker enough with the look of it. But the best I could find was a couple HTPC programs, and that seemed limiting. Problem with going with a well known graphic design firm would be $$$$'s. I'm looking more for a College/just starting out person who would undertake this without breaking the bank. anyuone here interested???

thanks

Check out MP3Car.com

There are LOADS of custom built software packages designed exactly for this purpose. Popular ones are MediaCar, MediaEngine, FrodoPlayer, Centrafuse, Neocar Media Center.

I am in the process of writing my own application, it's roughly 25% completed. Check my signature for my CarPC project 🙂 Hell, if you want to pay me some money for doing it then let me know! I'll be more than happy to accept the money! 😉

thats a cool idea...i had toyed with the idea of mounting a laptop in my old car a year or so back...i did have 2 screens in my z a few months ago...but i kept getting pulled over and getting tickets for them...so i sold them finally

Oh, and I hope it wasn't a Lilliput display. I have absolutely no faith in them, I have heard/read so many instances of them breaking 🙁 I was talking to a guy from LinITX.com, they sold about 100 Lilliput screens, and they had 30 of them back due to failures. The GAIN/Xenarc screens they've had about 1-2 returns per 100, and those were user errors. Their own-branded screens however are great.

thanks for the link, I checked out your project, is thast your proggy running on pic of the touch screen you use? That's along the line of what I'm looking for. I doubt I'll find anything with over the top animations and "flash" unless I have a custom job done. If you ever finish your project and release it I'd definitely be willing to check it out, and pay pal you some money if I use it...

Yeah, the pictures are one of the default skins for my application 🙂

Glad you like the look of it 🙂

I'll add you to the list of "people to inform when i've finally finished the application" 😉

Since about July. However, the past 3 months have had about 2% done, due to lots happening in work and home life. I am aiming for the next couple of months to get at least a Beta out.

However, that is 25% of the features, but in getting that done there is a lot of the backend stuff that has been done. I had lots to learn as it's the biggest thing I've ever written, the last big thing was a scientific style calculator 😉 So I have had to learn graphical stuff, database/SQL stuff etc 🙂
