my friend just bought a car and he's planning on adding a sound system. his budget is a MAXIMUM of $200 before tax/installation/etc. he asked me which brand is best but i'm not too familiar with sound systems...the brands he mentioned were Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Eclipse and JVC.

any ideas on which is the best? possible models he should consider? TIA

p.s. AT isn't a car forum and Off Topic isn't the place to post this, but most of the car people check this forum.

EDIT: he bought something so no more help needed

You can get yourself a nice Legacy 1000W amp with that kind of moolah. We're talking 1000 Watts here!

He'd be lucky to get a decent deck on that budget

Also, hard to go wrong with Eclipse

if hes on that tight of a budget tell him to go to the pawn shop and find a good set of kenwood or pioneer 12" with a 400 watt amp or so

alright it looks like eclipse is the top pick so far. any recommendations on what he should get from eclipse?

and yes, i'm pretty sure $200 is all he has for the whole thing. he spent most of his money on the car...

So is he looking for a stereo system or just a deck? As others have said, that won't go very far for a whole system (not that I know much about it as my car still has factory deck and speakers in it, but I don't want anything nice in my car until I can park it in a garage).

Yeah I dropped 1500 into my midrange system in my last car, now just sticking with the stock of my new car :D

My upgrade to my stock system sounds better to me. Plus I now have CD deck and a USB input.

IMO if you spend more than $500 on a car stereo system you are wasting money.
