Car stereo receivers, what's the markup?

I was shopping around today with my friend, and noticed that most places offered their receivers for about the same price, but at the same time, some stores offered the same receivers for 20-30 dollars cheaper. This makes me wonder what the markup is on these units. Anybody have experience with cd receivers (head units) and retail sales?

I bought a Pioneer 7400MP from sounddomain.com for about 230, would've been about 370 from Best buy or Circuit City

Pretty damn high because here in Florida you can buy the same Headunits you get at BB at WM for 20-30 cheaper.

i used to work at BB, and car sterio is a high-markup/profit (besides the service plans) department. employees could get said units for 100-175 w/ discount when BB would sell the same unit for 199 and up. so ur looking at at least a %50 markup.

I purchased my Kenwood head unit from here, and it was the best price I could find online.

If you know someone who works at CC/BB, go with them. markups are rediculous on car audio at these places.

Here's some idea. I paid $320 for my Kenwood receiver almost 3 years ago. 2 months after I bought mine I found it for $220. A year later when I got a sub/amp, I was able to get a $320 Kenwood amp for $250 from Good Guys. Looked around a bit and found ~$230 was the best price I could find. Based on this alone its at least 30%. BTW, Good Guys carries Eclipse now:ccol;

Yeah, the variations in prices were pretty outrageous at "11th street" in Los Angeles, where they have about 10 car audio stores on one street.

So they were lying to us about selling at cost...

Not suprised. You really have to know what you're doing down there to get a good deal. I also wouldn't be suprised if you ended up w/ "hot" goods.

Actually most of the stuff down there looks pretty legit. Everything looks as it should. I was kinda suprised, too.
