Car stereo question

I have the choice to run my subs at 4 Ohm or 2Ohm, the amp is rated at 400 watts at two Ohms and at 200 at 2 Ohms. So will it be louder at 2 Ohms? or is that over simplifying? Or is there something else happening to make it exactly the same.

Not over simplyfing things.... run it at 2 Ohms and you get more power. If thats all your asking, but you cant just choose 2 or 4 ohm, your sub is what sets that... A Dual Voice Coil with each one being 4 Ohms will run at 2 Ohms for example.

You are right normally I can't choose, but in this instanse I can because I haven't picked them up yet. I just saw last night that they came in 2 and 4 Ohm, so I was going to just go to a local store to buy since I didn't know anything about it, but thought I would ask here first. Looks like you guys came through...so 2 Ohm it is.

its not just the type of sub that determins ohms though...they can be rated for 2 or 4 ohm but you also have to consider the # of subs you are using and how you wire them (parallel/series/both) If you get 2 - 2 ohm dual voice coil subs you could put yourself in a 1ohm situation whcih your amp might not be stable for.
The 2ohm configuration can drive more power but you also have to consider what it will be doing to your amp, it is made to run at that but its gunna get hotter faster than if it were running in 4 ohm mode. Thus the amp could fail faster if you like your music loud. And its not like they will automatically be louder at 2 ohms, its more along the lines of you can go to higher volumes and your amp will be able to supply the power to drive your subs.
