I was thinking of adding a small sub to give a small amount of bass to my music. These wires were in the car and I assume they are connected to the Pioneer head unit that is in the car. I am curious as to why those wires run up and connect to each of my rear speakers, any ideas?

Looks like someone did some kinda of hack job for an input or output. lol.

I have no clue from only a pic.

Maybe running RCA jacks from the head unit? I'd be hesitant to plug that into anything without following the wires. God only knows what they did. Wiring it would have been helpful. I bet the people who bought my last house still thank God for me having wired a bunch of different cable wiring for them. Sure makes life easier, a little work up front!

Yeah skoorb. Nothing like getting into something electronic only to find that the previous owner went crazy with it. lol. I've seen long strands of bare wire wrapped in electrical tape and then just twisted together like a twist tie. lol

That's called "I'm trying to wire something and have absolutely on clue how to do anything the right way".

Your first clue should have been the duct tape.

Really it makes little sense. There's no reason to have stereo subwoofers. Line inputs are generally not RCA.

If you're going to install a subwoofer in your car, you want an RCA connection from your stereo to your amp. Lacking that, you'll need a speaker-> line out converter plugged into a back speaker and into an amplifier (which won't sound as good).

The first picture looks like they had some kind of audio device that was hooked into the black connector (that almost looks like a headunit connector). I see an orange wire (dimmer), red wire (constant +12v), black wire (ground) and a hint of a yellow wire (switched +12v), the RCAs are line-level outputs. I have no idea why it would be in the trunk though, unless they kept the HU in the trunk (edit: Unless i'm mis-interpreting the first picture and it's your passenger foot well and not the trunk)- this type of harness is typically kept in the dash.

The speaker wires connected to the crimp connectors are the front left (gray, black/gray) and rear left (green, black/green). I don't know why they'd be connected to the factory wiring harness though (the pink and blue/yellow wires)... is that a Honda?

Looks like the PO was too cheap to spend 20 bucks on a line-out converter. Also too stupid to know that duct tape is conductive.

I recommend fixing that ASAP before it shorts out and melts something.

The first picture looks like it was connected to a bazooka tube subwoofer (it uses that connector and a strap like that).
