I was almost home from a drive into the hills (around 5 miles to an ~800 foot elevation, rest for a couple hours, then drive home). Was coming to a stop sign about 2 blocks from the house (level ground), and when nearing a stop the car started shaking somewhat violently, a kind of shudder. 😵 Applying gas to move from the stop sign, it started again, seemed as though it wasn't in gear (it's an automatic, a 1997 Mazda 626LX 2.0L 4 cylinder couple with ~27,000 on it), then a few seconds later it acted as normal (!) for the last couple blocks until I got home. This about a week ago and I haven't driven it since.
There was an episode over a year ago when the car wouldn't go in gear for a couple of minutes. Then it did and I drove home nervously, didn't use the car for a while. Next time I used the car I drove it to the dealership and had the transmission fluid flushed and replaced. It's driven seemingly normal since. Research reveals that the car has an undersized transmission, the Ford CD4E, and even Mazda recommends installing an external transmission cooler to prolong the life of the transmission (on the owner's dime, I did this myself around 6 months ago after having the fluid changed). The car had driven seemingly normally since until last week. I don't know that the shudder I experienced was related to the transmission, but I suspect that's the case. I've never felt that shudder before. Comments please? Thank you.
