Is there such a thing out there?....I could of sworn....

My town just installed these new traffic lights. These are a bit odd in that they have these camera looking devices that are elevated about 3 or 4 feet in the air above the pole. Well as soon as I get to the intersection the light was red and a few seconds later it turned green. As soon as I turned another car just arrived in the opposite direction and the light immediatly turned green for him. Just maybe be a coincidence...but uhhh...

Using induction (i.e. big-ass coils in the pavement) to detect cars has been in use for a long time now. The cameras are probably monitoring devices and aren't tied into the traffic lights.

where i live they have those and they dont work right... so the light NEVER turns green... you have to run it. People from out of town will sit there for 20 minutes waiting with no cars in any direction... its retarded.

the ones we have couldnt work any more perfect. they are quite amazing because they are 100% accurate.

All the traffic lights in Orlando area are car-sensing (sensors under the street). Like 99% of these sensors are misplaced -- the sensors are almost all on the wrong side of the crosswalk in the middle of the intersection, so the light will NEVER change unless you either run it or use the right turn on red -> U-turn -> right turn trick.

yes, there are lights here that will activate the turn only lights if it detects there's a car in turning lane.
if there aren't any cars there, it will go straight to the regular green.
it there's NO cars, the light remains red and that side of the road never goes green.

Sometimes those camera-looking devices are to detect ambulances (and to change the light to green for them). It's like a remote control for them.

yes there is! I don't know how DOTD guys in your state install it, but in Louisiana, you'll notice these octagon shape on the road maybe 50 ft. from intersection (not quite sure about this). Its like a strip, when a vehicle passed over it, it detects on coming traffic.

yup, and we can use it with a speed controllable strobe light like this one
