Hey... fishing for ideas here - all suggestions welcome. This is from a conversation with a friend of mine a few days ago. Loads of cars have ben broken into in his street recently, just last week some fool smashed his side window and took the car stereo. So, being the tech type he conjoured this plan. It uses a concealed video camera (small, lens like 5mm diameter I believe - has IR lamp and makes a composite image) and a wireless transmitter. I forget the details of the broadcast standard but distance is about 100mm for reliable transmission.

So, the plan's this - transmit 24/7 from inside the car (except when in motion). The signal will be received by a PC that's always on in the house. The PC will compare each frame to the previous and look for changes. Any image changes should be gross, i.e. obvious. This is because the depth of field of the camera is relatively short - it's only going to "see" the car's interior. So, any frame-wise changes (like someone breaking in) will trigger the PC to start capturing video. Video goes to Police, bad guy get's arrested. That's the plan.

Now - suggestions on bolting it together please. He has the camera, IR kit and transmitter/receiver. I think it has S-Video output from the receiver. I was thinking of something like a Radeon All-in-Wonder to grab the video (as he has one) - are there more appropriate choices. We don't have to keep this dirt-cheap, just not studio-quality expense, eh! Any ideas on frame-by-frame comparing software?

Better still - anybody done something like this before?

Thanks in advance...

FatMan42, that sounds like a cool idea, if your friend already has an AIW, stick w/ that and see how the quality is. If it's not up to par, then think about upgrading. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks, Zim. Yeah, I'm less concerned with the image-grabbing/video compressing ability of the AIW card - rather I'd like some tips and advice on the "trigger". I have no idea how get the PC to recognise when the car's been broken into. I did see some time ago a user-created script on the Hauppage web site (I had a WinTV PCI card back then - back before there was nothing worth watching on TV any longer, but that's a whole different thread...) that did exactly that. This guy had a video camera outside his house and the prog compared sequential images for changes and then triggered an action. I think it was to take continuous video, or to upload to an FTP/web-site. Whatever... anywhay, it wasn't on their site any more.

So, I'm looking for advice on how to get the PC to recognise when it should start recording. Anybody...?

You may want to point him to X10 website. They already have wireless cameras/receivers, and "trigger on motion" software.

Check it out.

Good idea, ScottMac :) . Looks like they have some software that does exactly what's needed. And I had written X10 off as nothing better than an irritating source of pop-up ads! Any more ideas out there...?

Well, you could always take the raw transmission and analyse it - I am thinking Fast Fourier Transformation and looking for frequency changes. But I guess X-10 may be the better choice, especially since writing the software would be a pain
