:(

I've never been out west- I think I'm going to take a week of vacation time and fly out there sometime this year.

Maybe I could even get a free place to stay in a beautiful mansion! :D

Personally, I'd like to see it mandated that advertised prices include fees and taxes. There's way too many things that get jacked way the hell up because of them. Cable TV, telephone, and traffic tickets come to mind ($20 ticket plus $120 in court costs...).

My dad has some connections...I might be able to get hooked up. I went to Tampa and had a Saturn Aura (252hp 6sp auto) for $20/day, and I was under 25 then. :)

Actually, the plane ticket (round-trip NH to AZ), including fees, is $5.47 more. Yes, the decimal is in the right place. :Q

And the plane ticket includes gas.

You could check into other rentals outside of the airport and hop a cab to them. Cabs in Phoenix aren't too bad.

At the least, it'll get around that $42 facility fee.

Yep- and the last time I talked to my dad, I think jet fuel was still over $5 or $6/gal!

Genius!

At a non-airport location, it's $202.71 total for a compact ($181.74 for economy).

I live 1000 miles away from Phoenix. I took my own car and spent a week out there. Altogether, I put on 4000 miles.

1000 to get there

2000 driving around the valley during the day, checking out the people and the mountains, gambling at the various reservations, visiting relatives in the evening

1000 to get back

------
4000 miles

You are going to put on 5000 miles just on the round trip itself. If you want to do anything in Phoenix you have to drive all over bfe to do it. So be glad gas isnt $4. I suspect youll have 6000-7000 when you are done.

I intend on flying.

If time off wasn't a concern, I'd love to drive- a cross-country road trip is on my list of things to do..but not this time. :)

Oh. Well that was just in case. I can usually drive 1000 miles per day. It takes about 16+ hours with essential stops only. Drink Red Bull. Ive done it several times. On one trip I kept a record of the time I left my house until I arrived in Goodyear AZ. Even though I averaged about 85 on the freeway, if you threw in bathroom breaks / gas breaks and food/snack/stretch breaks, dividing the distance by the time gave me an average travel speed of roughly 63 MPH. That was weird.

I just drove from NH to FL a few weeks ago- did ~1400mi in two days. I think my GPS's average moving time was about 64mph at the end...got stuck in a 7mi stretch of road backup due to rubberneckers..(oh I was pissed..the accident was on the OTHER HIGHWAY, even) and knocked a mph or so off my overall average.

If you needed full insurance you can probably triple that. This is how those places get away with advertising $19/day for a car because they rear end you with backdoor fees.

Travelocity and similar sites have way better prices on rentals... I just rented a car and got it for 100 bucks cheaper through Travelocity than the agency's site. By the way - Fuck Alamo

we had to rent by the week for 3 weeks after totalling a car. Used ?priceline? and used the name your own price option. We were getting 13 dollars a day iirc. See whatever the lowest you can find is then go put in an offer there.

They pay for car rental insurance full coverage? Whenever I go to get a rental car I usually have to pay like $40-50/day extra in full coverage insurance. Sometimes Enterprise lets me get a car for free or $10/day but the insurance ruins it for me. I started using Zipcar instead which usually costs like $10/hour to $80/day but everything is paid for. All insurance and even gas is paid for (they give you a gas card).

I'd still like to find a way to get rental cars cheaper since I don't think $80/day including gas is really a great deal.
