So, if I rent a car for a friend and an accident/problem occurs - will it affect me? (credit, liability, etc). Because its under my name? Or is there a way to deal with this issue (liability, etc)

TIA

BUMP

PS my friends are willing to get the comprehensive coverage thing with their rental - supposedly covers them totally and I won't be at fault no matter what happens or something like that.

Yes, it will screw you over.

don't rent cars for friends. why can't they rent in themselves?

car rental insurance insures who evers renting it, ie you.

i cant make sense of your last point, whos insurance? who would be renting it?

For some odd reason - they need someone at least 25 which none of them are.

where you are renting from?

most companies (big ones) will allow you to rent under 25 (but above 21) for an additional daily fee. they will still need a major credit card.

I dont know of any company that will rent a car to anyone under 25. Usually they 21 thing applies to people who may be driving the car other than the person who rented it.

If you know whats good for you you wont do it.

yes you will be held liable. if you do rent from avis you will have to declare anyone else that will be driving your car.

I would get comprehensive and full liability insurance.

didn't you ever see that seinfeld episode. but seriously, it shouldn't be put on you to rent a car for your friend. I had to rent one while my car was being fixed (i'm 22) and they (enterprise) didn't even flinch. enterprise will even come pick you up.

I used to work at Enterprise rent-a-car and they do rent to anyone over 21. If you are under 25, there will be a fee. However, if you are nice and ask the fee to be waived, sometimes they'll do it.

Don't ever rent a car for your friend. In the rental agreement, your name is the one that will be held liable no matter what happens. If you don't put the additional driver name, and your friend involve in an accident, you will be held 100% responsible. Even when you buy the full coverage (insurance), that's only covering you and any authorized additional driver. If you let your friend drive it and he is not an authorized driver, the insurance is void.

If you put your friend as additional driver and he is under 25, you still have to pay for the fee. Basically, get your friend to rent it himself.

Also, your "friend" could go on a rampage parking in handicapped zones, not paying meters, etc, and get ticketed like crazy, toss them out and guess what, you get the bills for it several months later from the rental company, plus a stiff penalty for not paying up. Not worth it.

Normally, if you rent a car, get in an accident, and don't buy their insurance, you have to pay a $500 deductable....even if it wasn't your fault. It's a crappy situation.

As all above have stated....don't do it.

Hell, they have parents right? Have them do the renting for their spawn.
