I'm watching Boiler Room now, and some of these comments are clearly not written by someone who knows cars.

"That's a nice car you got there."
"Yeah, Ferrari."
"Yeah it's a Ferrari 355. 6-spd transmission right?"
"Yeah it's synchromesh."

Wtf mentions that a Ferrari has a 6-spd, and that it's syncro-mesh?

Then Ben Affleck is in the interview room talking about how rich he is..

"I'm filthy rich. I drive a Ferrari 355 cabriolet".

I doubt it.

I remember seeing syncromesh thrown around in some of the articles about Ferraris so they probably pulled it from that.

Who cares that he called it a cabriolet (common name for convertibles) instead of a spider? Hmm, maybe thats some attention whoring on your part?

If you take a movie made for entertainment, that is not about cars, and then nitpick things like that, then you're just being an elitist a-hole.

Advertising usually works the other way around. ;) Ferrari would pay to have their car mentioned. Ferrari didn't pay, so the show didn't mention a real car.

a) Do you know anything about cars? What Giovanni said about the Ferrari could've been applied to a Hyundai Tiburon. They could've pulled it from a magazine just as they could've said that the car had brake and gas pedals, the point is, the line was cheesy and reflected poor research when it came to writing those lines.
b) Different companies use different names to refer to the convertible lines. You would not call a Mustang convertible a Mustang spider anymore than you would refer to a Ferrari as a Cabriolet. Again this reflects poor research on the part of the writers. I don't see at all why this is attention whoring on my part, but then again I'm slow. Can you explain this to me?
c) No, an elitist a-hole is someone who passes one's common observations regarding a movie to create discussion on a discussion board as attention whoring and being an elitist.

Um, yes, I know plenty about cars.

I'm so glad you read my post. Did you not see the part about it being a movie for entertainment, and that the focal point of the movie wasn't cars, so why would they care to go that deep into getting things correct to please anal retentious people like yourself?

Look at definition 2. Cabriolet is actually a pretty generic term for convertibles. In fact, its nearly as generic as the term convertible itself. So for them to call a convertible Ferrari, a cabriolet, its not that big of a deal.

The fact is, around the time of the movie, magazines would use buzzwords like syncromesh because Ferrari would do so, hence they probably read an article about some Ferrari in a magazine and just picked up on it. Notice that most people wouldn't pick up on the term being pretty much fitting for a lot of cars, and thus for the majority of audiences it would sound like a more specific and technical term than it is.

Um, lets see, Ferrari calls their cars Spider, hmm, lets see, Syringer and spiders, no, cant' come up with a connection between the two...

I don't get people who nitpick crap like that in a movie, when movies are made first and foremost for entertainment. Accuracy always takes a backseat, regardless of the film. Do you think they sat around the set that day going, someone needs to do research and make sure this is correct, we want to get things right? No they just did their lines and didn't think about some minute detail that has no impact on the subject matter of the film (so its relevance is pretty much nil).
