I'm looking to buy a used car.. something under $6500. I want the fastest beast I can get, but am having a hard time deciding what to buy. It can be any kind of car, but just for an idea of what I'm looking for here are some of the models I have been looking at:
-1980s Mazda RX-7
-1972 Dodge Charger
-1974 Chevy Corvette
-1969 Ford Mustang
-1980s Nissan 300ZX

I am quite unfamiliar with imports, but right now they are a bit more appealing to me because of the miles per gallon and price advantages.

Well, if you're looking for fast and under $6500 a mid 70s Corvette is the last car you should be considering. You could pick up a late 80s Mustang for that easily and with a few mods those things smoke.

fast in a straight line that's for sure :D

the 71's and up IMO are ugly.

As much as I like the 1969 Mustang unless you?re buying one with a big block your better off with a 1970 model. The 1969 Mach 1 came with a 250hp 351W, which in it's own right is a fast engine for that car. But the 1970 Mach 1 came with a 351C engine yielding 285hp with the same equipment. Both engine are the four barrel version or known as the 4V.

90-93 Miata + Greddy turbo. You can probably score the car for $4k, the base Greddy kit is ~$1200. It's upgradable to 12psi which is good for ~200 rwhp when properly tuned, but no need to upgrade engine parts.

Don't even consider the '80's 300 or '70's corvette. The '69 mustang would look really cool in fastback (or mach1 fastback) but the cars do not perform that well, and finding one that does would cost more than $6500. The '80's RX7's are nice, a turbo model would not be fast either, hell a 2003 VW Beetle Turbo S/Mini Cooper S is as fast or faster than one.

Here are some better choices:

'90 Eagle Talon TSi AWD (Or eclipse/laser, but the talons have the black roof/spoiler that looks great)
--Can gain power very easily with it's 4g63 engine, and the money leftover after buying car can easily make this car perform like a charm

'90 Mustang 5.0HO
--This car is quite ugly, but it can very easily be made to hit low 13's and breach 12's

'94+ Camaro Z28 or Firebird Transam
--These cars are high 13's low 14's stock, and are still in your price range, and are also easily modded

'03 Beetle Turbo S or Mini Cooper S
--Just had to mention the fact that these two cars make a 15.0/15.1 in the quarter mile :p

EDIT: The Grand national above my post is *fast*

Yes, larger ports and valves in the head plus a higher compression ratio.
