My dad is in the market for a new car... (58 years old)

Here is his situation;

Works the nightshift at Walgreens about 4-5 miles from his house, dosent drive much more than 70 miles a week, if not less.

Nearly 90-95% city driving.

He is planning on leasing since he enjoys getting a new car every 3 years and wouldn't mind the lower monthly payment in the meantime, and my mom has a sport-ute, so he can just use her car when going to home depot and lowes.

Since i just purchased a Mazda3s, he loves the car, but i only get about 20mpg in the city (big contrast to the 29mpg i get on the highway), so he is probably going to shy away from the 3.

What do you reccomend?

Were looking at the Mini Cooper (he though it was cute and fun to drive), fairly good price starting at like 17k (he said he didnt really need the 's') and the leases are quite inexpensive due to the high resale value.

The prius was another option, but it sounds like they don't lease well (at least with what totota told us).

He's honesly open to anything, only requirement, no Ford/GM/Chrysler, he just dosen't care for em.

Why care about the gas mileage for such a short drive?

Word. If he's only doing 70 city miles a week, and driving like - well, an old man :p - he'll get closer to 25mpg easily and burn maybe three gallons. He'll go through a tank a month. :p

It's going to be a waste to not drive a MINI. A resdesign is coming in 2007 with some minor changes in 2006 (first deliveries should be in July). They are adding silver to the available roof colors, changing two colors, changing the seats, and a number of othe rminnor things.

If he just wants a commuter car that's easy to drive, i'd look at the intro cars from all the large manufacturers.

Ford Focus
Dodge Neon
Toyota Corolla
Nissan Sentra
Honda Civic

they're all different, but mileage will be good in all of them, all small and easy to maneuver around, and all fairly cheap.

3 year leases are basically money down the drain, It lets you get to work, but at the end, you've got nothing but a hole in the pocket. But, seeing as he wants a new car in 3 years, I feel he should keep getting cheap cars that he enjoys driving, and then when he's ready to buy something for good, go all out and buy a nice(r) car with the money he saved from getting cheap cars. At 58 he's got at least 9 years before he starts collecting social security. That's a lot of car payments he can save money on by going small for now.

Well, other than the MiniCooper, the Corolla does have the nicest interior by far and fit/finish out of all the compact cars from major manufacturers.

We don't get the 1series here nor the MB AClass. Does he need the practicality of being able to load stuff in the car? It does sound like you don't...

He might like a new VW Jetta TDI or Golf TDI and I'm betting the MB E320 CDI is a bit out of the price range.

The biggest SUV or truck you can find. Ford Excursion or Ford F350 comes to mind.

The Corolla XRS is super nice. I really like them.

I don't know if that is too much or what, but they are nice cars.. much nicer than the basic models, and even the "S" model.

if he is only driving 4 miles, the car wont even have a chance to warm up. he won't get very good mileage no matter what.
