Car Question

I brought my car to a mechanic last week for a transmission problem. He called back w/ an estimate of $1400. He said the torque converter and clutch both needed to be replaced.

Excuse my ignorance, but do automatic transmissions have clutches. I didn't question it until a wannabe mechanic friend told me they have "shift modules."

What type of car is this? Regardless, get a second opinion. Automatic transmissions to have internal "clutch-packs" and that could be what he is talking about. $1400 should cover a installation of a rebuilt transmission, IMHO.

Ahhhh... AWD I see. Depending on the system, power is diverted where needed via clutch packs like PCAddict said. It uses wheel slippage to drive fluid through the clutchpack and divert power as Suburu put it, "From the wheels that slip, to the wheels that grip."

Any chance your vehicle is still under its powertrain warranty?

Ahh... AWD. Yes, I am sure there is some sort of a viscous clutch-type system for that. The picture is clearer now.

When you do get it fixed, use good synthetic ATF fluid in it. It's well worth it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check on the powertrain warranty.

But fear not . . . The mechanic assured me he'd treat me well b/c Im only 16 and don't have a lot of money to spend on repairing my wheels.

I don't wanna be pouring alcohol, tobacco, and/or firearms in my car. That can't be healthy for it.

Also, how many miles do you have on your car?

Yea, automagic transmission fluid. My favorite is Mobil 1. Pricey, but worth not having to replace the tranny. Once you get this fixed up, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change every 10,000 miles to be safe. Dunno much about AWD cars, so I can't be of too much help on your problem, sorry.
