Im buying a 1982 Firebird 5.0L 305 V-8 4-speed auto tommarow for $300 and Im plaining to get a 350 LT1 ($1200) 6-speed tranny ($???) 6-speed shifter ($???) 6-speed gearbox ($???). My friend has hookups at a chevy dealer so im good on the parts being cheap and them puting them in. What tranny ect should I get and what are the costs? Will I need anything else to make it run other then the 4 things i mentioned? Thanx

Will the 6-speed you want to buy match up to the driveshaft and the bellhousing of your car? I would think you will need a new driveshaft and maybe a custom bellhousing because a five speed swap is more popular for you year than a six-speed.

Who is going to be doing the swap? Maybe you should post on WorldWideCamaro in one of their messageboards or post on Camaroz28.com.

Those people can give you a complete parts list and recommend the perfect setup.

go to a wrecker's yard and find a wrecked LT1 with a T56(6 speed tranny) and just pull the whole drivetrain(assuming it's in good condition)

You will need minimum:

New driveshaft.
Entire wiring harness and computer for the engine.
New fuel pump.
New fan.
New exaust.
Motor mounts may work. Measure carefully.

I am sure I am missing some stuff, this is just off the top of my head.

Your prices are way off. LT1 crate engine: $5750 with computer and wiring harness. Expect a 6 speed to run in the 1200-1400 range for new.

You would be much better finding a wrecked car and pulling the engine, trans, and wiring harness from it. another option would be the brand new 383 stroker that GM offers. Makes 340 hp and 430 lb/ft of torque for about $3800. Has 9.1 to 1 compression for pump friendlyness. I have the part number somewhere of you want it.

Are you just drawn to the 82 body/interior? If not, buying an LT1 equiped firebird will be cheaper even if it needs a rebuild.

Well i talked to my friend Joe at pohanka and he said the LT1 with his discount is $1200 w/o intake manifold. And that 383 looks sweet how do you know bout that 383? Last 383 i saw was the hemi 383 ;) Well pretty much im going to talk to my friend and price it all in a few days.
