Car question about Carerras....

I want to purchase a 1977 porsche carrera (mainly because I was born that year, and I like the way they look). Is there anything horribly wrong with this years model? Any and all info on this would be great!

I'm not too familiar with that year of Porche, but I can provide insight into your reasons for buying. No offense, but that has to be the absolute worst reason to buy a car. EVAR.

It's a wonderful car, but do your research before you buy. You want the best example you can afford. You DON'T want to buy a "project car" - Porsche parts are staggeringly expensive as are Porsche mechanics. Even a car that looks like it just needs a little TLC can cost many thousands to get right. 911s are about the most reliable sports cars out there; it's not at all uncommon to see them with 200 - 250k miles on them.....but when they break, they break big.

Whenever you buy a Porsche make sure you get the most complete service records you can. - the 70's 911s have a problem with their head studs, and you want to make sure it's been updated with the good ones. IIRC 911s made before 1976 had terrible rust problems (as did most other European cars). Porsche then went to galvanized bodies that hold up very well.

The 1978 - 1982 SC models have a reputation for being the most bulletproof of the original 911s. They're also quite fast and have killer-looking fender flares. That's what I'd get.

Above all make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection by a certified Porsche mechanic.

Go to the forums at www.rennlist.com and read the FAQs. Good luck.
