Something messed up with my cooling and heating system. When its heavy rain or snow windows get foggy and defroster dont do crap! yesterday tried to turn AC on and warm air blowing. either freeon leaking or something else.


how much do you estimate AC repairs are?


Should I take it to regular mechanic or shop I know that only do AC and radiator repairs have good reputation

Well first make sure the blend to the heat and A/C is working.

Second run teh car with the A/C set to max. Now look under the hood at the Compresor and see if it is running or just turn on, turn off, or not running at all. If it is running then you may have a blend door problem. If it comes on and turns off quickly, then you just may need a shot of Freon. If not running at all you probable have a leak and ned it fully tested.

Take the car to a good trusted independent shop that has the RIGHT equipment for the job. Don't go to a national chain, MOST are not where you want to be.


Repairs to A/C systems can be as low as around $100 and up to a thousand dollars or more. It depends if the car already has R134a and what needs to be replaced to fix the leak, if it has one.

Also what is the year make and model?

Well do you know anything about them???

Ask your freinds and find out if they are a good shop. You can also check with the BBB.

And ask for a estimate BEFORE repairs are made.
 
well I know of them because my friend had radiator problem last year, his mechanic reccomended that shop. I went with him owner seemed nice repaired it quickly for reasonable price

My A/C hasn't been effective/efficient for about 2 summers now. I brought it in to a small shop and he told me I needed repairs beyond a freon refill because the freon he was refilling it with was leaking back out. I forget the details, but it cost over $200 to repair... I didn't go for it then... and I may have to soon.
 
um, it depends if it's R134-a or R12. the latter is about 50x more expensive.



try to find the sight glass underneath the hood and see if there's bubbles flowing by when the compressor's running.

The price my friend quoted me for R12 was about $35 a half-pound. Figure a typical A/C system wants about 3 pounds and there you go. I'm gonna get my A/C serviced after I do my motor swap and get me the R12 my system loves🙂
 
$125 5 minutes of mechanics time change change the rubber band type thing on the connector, one plastic thing and added freeon. will see how long it will last, since i dont think it leaked there. the place has good reputation, if it stops working again I will force to fix it free

Well freon ain't cheap.
 
If its just an o-ring leak you are lucky and thats very reasonable. The average Ford will have compressor seal leakage, internal damage clogging the orifice and maybe a manifold hose leaking. That repair with full system flush would cost an average of about 1200.00 in a dealer shop. Many older cars by the time you need a repair like that would be trade in time.

And if you think a little independent shop will do 500.00 worth of additional repairs FREE because they didnt fix it right the first time you are dreaming. Most have freon loss disclaimers. I Re-repair many independent shop's bandaid fixes.
