Car problem....complicated

I know its a domestic and I know how you guys feel about them.

I have no interior lights, tail lights and no orange lights. The headlights that are outside are the interior ones and not the exterior ones, I think they are called the low beams (not sure). My chime is also malfuntioning. It is constant even though the keys are out of the ignition and the lights are off. My A/C also went out at the same time that these other problems started to happen. I just had it recharged with 2lbs of frion (sp). Also, when I use my remote start everythign works fine, my interior lights, headlights, foglights..everything. I took it to Bobby Likus Car Clinic here in Pensacola Florida and they said there was a recall on the vehicle and that should fix it. I went to the DMV website and such and it had a recall on there about it and some of the symptoms were similar to what I have. The dealership reports that there are no recalls even though its on ALLDATA and in the DMV. My mechanic back home said it was a fuse but I had all them checked and Bobby Likus checked them.

Your thoughts?

Cliff Notes:
1. No interior lights
2. No Tail Lights
3. Chime is constant
4. No A/C

Checked fuses

Check the recall at the following website
Here

This is from my past thread...Here

Thanks for reading.

My parents have an Arura about the same age. Car looks nice but they've had nothing but problems. Gas gauge doesn't work, power seat adjusters quit working, the list goes on and on.

Check your bulbs one by one. The way Olds wired things back then if one bulb goes out then a bunch of other bulbs don't light. Pain in the butt.

Olds screwed the dash wiring on those things. I've got a '95 that has had numerous weird problems that all lead back to the wiring either in the steering column or dash. Take it to a trusted mechanic, not the dealership. If it's a recall, show your mechanic, and he can make sure it gets done for free.

The trusty mechanic that I took it to said it was a recall but they can't honor it. It must be done at the dealership, but when the dealership looks in the VIS he only sees one recall on the vehicle and not the one that is posted on the other sites. I have called Oldsmobile/GM many times and got nothing. Filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau Etc. and nothing. I am not from here (originally from Wisconsin) but the Bobby Likus place was recommended. I'm just curious as to if the recall is actually the problem or not.

Here is what I found on the recall. The dealer may be saying it has already been done. If so, they are off the hook.

System: Ignition and anti-theft. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 114 and No. 208.

Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles.

Description of Noncompliance: These vehicles were assembled with a malfunction alarm, lighting and locking (mall) module that may contain a damaged capacitor. If the capacitor is damaged, the "Key in the Ignition" warning chime and the driver seat belt unbuckled warning chime and indicator lamp may not work. This does not meet the requirements of FMVSS No. 114, "Theft Protection," and FMSS No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." In addition, other chime reminder functions, interior lighting controls and power door locking features are also affected.

Consequence of Noncompliance: The driver may not be aware that the key was left in the ignition or that the safety belt was not buckled.

Corrective Action: Dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the mall module.

Note: Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time, should contact Buick at 1-800-521-7300; Oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537; or Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737.

Even though it's the same recall, GM will have one number for it, and NHTSA will have another number for it. If you gave him the NHTSA number, he won't have it since GM gives it their own number and they don't cross-reference each other. It's probably the same one.

I have taken it to a dealership already and they could not see it in their system under my VIN number from their VIS. Since they do not get reimbursed they do not want to do it. ALLDATA clearly says that my VIN number falls within the range of VIN Numbers that have this defect.

NHTSA gave it a campaign number but its almost like GM doesn't even know what that number is when I told them what it was. They must not have the same numbers for things and that is why things are screwed up.

Do you think I should try calling back Oldsmobile AGAIN? They don't really want to help me at all.

My wild guess will be the headlight switch. All that crap usually runs through it. Do the brake lights still work when you step on the brake?

Yes they do. And everything works FINE when I use my remote start.

Oldsmobile, who? ;)

Have the dealer give you an estimate. Figure out what they are fixing, and if it's what is in the recall, point it out again. Don't pay for any of the recall items. If it is something else, then either have them do it ($$$$) or have your mechanic do it ($$).

Edit:

Specify an amount you are not willing to pay over, so say like $150 - $200, which it will most likely be above that on that car, and then they can't touch it until you approve. You can ask for a list of what is costing you at that point, also.

Try spraying contact cleaner in your ignition. Clean it out with q-tips. The early Aurora's had many problems with too much grease in the steering column.

Why would this effect my tail lights and chime and everything else? The only reason I think this recall might be on the money is because it says that it effects my chime and my interior lights.

Good post...will think about that approach.

Does that recall sound like it could work? Some of the things it says is on the money and some are not listed. I am out of state, but the car place (Bobby Likus) got a pretty good recommendation so its all I can go by. It would be SUPER nice if this was a recall considering I am poor.

I'm a novice...where is the ignition located? Under the hood?

Uhh, it's where the KEY goes in in the steering column
