How do you translate a MercedesBenz model numbers?
For instance, BMW first number is the body style, the second 2 the engine displacement in tenths of litres, and the A would be automatic transmission.

The number part is "usually" the displacement in liters (320 = 3.2 liters).
D at the end = Diesel
SD = Turbodiesel
K = Supercharged

The lead off letter is the 'class', and I'm not at all sure what the formula for that is, but I think S-Class is the top of the line.

N.B. - This what I remember from years ago, so sue me if I'm wrong.

Yup, for Merc's the number is the displacement, the leading letter is the class, S class C class M class
Not sure what they stand for

K = Kompressor (supercharged)

for SLK
S = sportlich (sporty) i think this is what the S stands for
L = dunno (light?)
K = kompressor

Example: E320

The E is the class of vehicle. In order from smallest to largest:

C, SLK, E, CLK, SL, CL, S <--- cars
ML, G <--- SUV's

320 refers to the displacement of the engine in centilitres. Any car with 320 at the end has the 3.2L V6. The only exception to this rule are the AMG tuned (think BMW //M cars) cars which use 2 numbers instead of three. In the E class' case, the AMG tuned model is the E55 which has (you guessed it) a 5.5L V8.

Before the number, "C" denotes the standard size car, "E" a bigger car, and "S" the largest car.

I think SL, SLK and other suffixes denote attributes, rather than size.

I believe 'SL' is short for 'Superleggera' which means superlight, like in a sports roadster.
