What does a Maintenance Required light check for? Is it purely because of mileage. What do you guys do when/if it comes on?

BTW it's a 2003 Honda Civic with ~40K on it.

Edit: I've decided to take it in but how much should I expect to pay?

telling you a scheduled maintainance is up for due.

why else would it pop up ?

perform a scheduled maintainance and reset the light

Just poke it out with a screw driver. Don't worry about getting any maintenance or anything. Car makers just put them there to bug you.

At 40k miles, you Honda is telling you it needs an Inspection I done. You can take it to the Honda Dealer an Indy shop. Inspection I consist of checking: Oil, brakes, Coolant, air filter, Tires, ect. If you're handy with a wrench it pretty easy DIY.

The maintenance light will flash when you turn the car on 8000 miles after it was reset, and it will stay on after 10k miles. It is based entirely on mileage.

How long ago did you get the car, and do you know anything about the maintenance history?

Posted approximate scheduled maintenance at my Honda dealership are $100 for 7500 miles, $200 for 15000 miles and $400 for 30k miles.

Note that the actual maintenance intervals are 5k miles for severe driving and 10k miles for regular driving.

Those prices are pretty expensive considering how little they actually do. I just bought the maintenance manual and do it myself.
