My g/f's 1998 Malibu is making an odd noise when she starts it, it makes a "clicking" noise coming from the engine block, it is not coming from the belt that is on the outside of the engine block.

when you rev the engine it causes the clicking to occur at a faster rate...any ideas?

anyone know of a good mechanic someplace near westwood/santamonica/culver city area?
edit more info:

its been running fine and used a lot recently with no problems, all the fluids are fine

the car has about 75K mileage on in it

Has the car been sitting for a long time? It might just be a hydraulic lifter pumping up after leaking down. That can take a few minutes after starting.

Uh... If it's piston slap, you need a complete rebuild on the engine, and even if it's "just" an iffy lifter, that lifter still needs to be replaced. If it's something else in the valvetrain it could be much worse than just replacing a lifter.

My mazda used to have this problem with the valve lifters that made it click like crazy until it was run for a while.

you don't need to rebuild anything for piston slap.

Just it's eventual aftermath.

You mean its inevitable aftermath.

I really hope that this guy doesn't actually believe that piston slap isn't a huge issue.

Fill the gasoline tank.
Kill somebody. Or rob a bank.
Engage in high speed chase.
Continue high speed chase.
Eventually pull over and surrender to police.
If the engine lasted through the above, there is no problem and you can live the rest of your life in peace and tranquility.

That ticking is usually only audible during cool-down after the engine is turned off. You shouldn't be able to hear the ticking of the exhaust system expanding and contracting with the engine running.
